For the past 20 years, I have been visiting and volunteering at an orphanage in Honduras. From my very first visit, I fell in love with this country and its people. It has become my second home. A place I love to visit and long for when I am away, a place that, no matter how many times I go, I always feel joy and excitement when I arrive (and a little relieved—for those who have ever landed at Toncontin airport in Tegucigalpa, you understand what I mean!).
As much happiness as it brings me to visit, I always feel sad to leave and, as the plane takes off, my eyes fill with tears watching as we ascend further and further away, knowing it will be another year before I am able to return. Honduras, and especially the Honduran people, will always have a piece of my heart.
